Tropospheric Ozone Profile Retrievals from an Airborne Ultra- violet/Visible Spectrometer

چکیده
We present a novel technique to retrieve ozone profiles, and especially, tropospheric ozone (O3) from airborne Ultraviolet-Visible (UV) spectrometer measurements. The profile retrieval is possible by viewing a variety of zenith angles from down-looking and up-looking directions, taking advantage of O3 absorption in the Huggins (300-340 nm) and the Chappuis bands (530-650 nm). Measurements are normalized to measured direct irradiances or zenith-sky radiances so our approach does not require the use of a solar reference. This technique is especially sensitive to tropospheric O3 below and ~10 km above the aircraft with a resolution of ~2-6 km and is sensitive to lower and middle stratospheric O3 with a vertical resolution of 8-15 km. It can measure tropospheric O3 at a horizontal resolution of 2 km × 2 km or even higher and is therefore well suited for regional air quality studies and validation of satellite measurements.

Improved tropospheric ozone profile retrievals using OMI and TES radiances
[1] We perform a study for characterizing the vertical resolution of tropospheric ozone profile retrievals from the combination of simulated ultraviolet (UV) and thermal infrared (TIR) observations that are representative of the EOS Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES). Under the low thermal contrast conditions used for this simulation, we find...

[1] In this paper, the vertical resolution for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) nadir ozone retrievals is established and is used to assess the ability of TES to capture time variations of ozone in the troposphere. This characterization is based on retrievals of ozone using simulated radiances generated from ozonesonde profiles taken over Bermuda from 14 April to 25 May 1993. To that en...

[1] We develop an approach to estimate and characterize trace gas retrievals in the presence of clouds in high spectral measurements of upwelling radiance in the infrared spectral region (650–2260 cm ). The radiance contribution of clouds is parameterized in terms of a set of frequency-dependent nonscattering optical depths and a cloud height. These cloud parameters are retrieved jointly with s...

We present a novel technique for retrieving ozone (O3) profiles and especially tropospheric O3 from airborne UV/visible spectrometer measurements. This technique utilizes radiance spectra from one down-looking and two up-looking (85 degrees and 75 degrees) directions, taking advantage of the O3 absorption structure in the Huggins (300-340-nm) and Chappuis (530-650-nm) bands. This technique is e...
متن کاملValidation of Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer ozone profiles with aircraft observations during the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment–B
[1] The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is an infrared instrument that was launched on board NASA’s Aura satellite in 2004. TES is the first instrument to provide vertical information on tropospheric ozone while simultaneously measuring CO on a global basis. Before they may be used for scientific study, TES profiles must first be validated to determine if there are any systematic biase...
